Fatphobia Ingrained

From the second we enter this world, we are told that our bodies need to fit into certain criteria to be accepted by society. Fatphobia is ingrained into everything we do, and bigger bodies are seen as a disease, and staying in a bigger body is a choice. Simple items like desks in classrooms show how rooted fatphobia is in our society. I added the negative images we see in the media to the desks at Gilman Hall to show how simple items can have a huge impact. As the negative images and comments pile up, it takes a toll on students’ mental health and can even cause them to leave the university altogether. My work was inspired by the podcast Maintenance Phase by Aubrey Gordon and Michael Hobbes. Submitted by Camryn McPherson.
